Tips on how to care for your boiler

Your boiler is an essential appliance in your home. It provides you with hot water and heating throughout the year, and we all appreciate it even more in the winter months. Here, we are going to give you a few tips to show your boiler some much needed love this valentine.

First things first, a boiler service is key to keeping your boiler in tip top condition. We have three service and cover plans to choose from and all include an annual boiler service. An annual service ensures your boiler is operating safely, but it also makes sure that your boiler is working efficiently - something that can save you a lot of money over time.

Below are some tips that you can follow to help maintain your boiler without the need of a gas engineer.

Increase the pressure

Keeping your boiler at the correct water pressure will ensure that the boiler is working to its full potential. You can check your boiler pressure by checking the pressure display or gauge on the front of your boiler (usually behind a small door). You just need to check if the pressure is set between 1 and 1.5. If it is below, you just need to turn up the pressure a little. 

Turn up the heat

It is a good idea, like with any appliance, to regularly check that everything is working ok, especially if it hasn’t been used in a while. We advise turning your heating on every now and again to avoid your boiler feeling neglected, and ensure your heating will be ready for when you need it.

Bleeding love

Do you have any radiators in your home which only heat up at the bottom and stay cold at the top?

This means your radiator needs bleeding. It is simply caused by trapped air in the heating system. This usually occurs because of extra water being added to the heating system during general maintenance or due to the action the pump makes. Bleeding only takes a few minutes. Let it breathe

Although your boiler likes to remain cold, they also need space around them.

Make sure the cupboard or space that your boiler is kept in isn’t too cramped as a boiler requires ventilation. It also helps to have easy access to your boiler when you need it.

Give it some TLC

If you have tried all our tips and you still think your boiler is not running as efficiently, it is likely you may need a new one. If your boiler is 10 years or older, then a new energy efficient model may be the answer. Although a new boiler can be expensive, it could save you money in the long run as there will be less unexpected breakdowns and it will run more efficiently.
